Helping stray animals: the animals that are left behind, but must not be forgotten
No basket, no name, no home. Stray and abandoned animals belong to no one, and that is exactly why they are so vulnerable. Here is how to help an animal that no one wanted to keep, yet left behind.
Not every animal on the street is there by accident. Some have run off or got lost, others were deliberately left behind when they became inconvenient. The result is the same: an animal with no owner, no basket and no one to call the vet.
Stray and abandoned animals slip out of sight easily. That is exactly why they need our help the most.
How an animal ends up on the street
A house move, a break-up, an animal that turned out bigger or costlier than expected. The reasons differ, the outcome does not: the animal is left behind. Others simply lose their way and never find their home again. Without a chip or owner, no one is called, and a silent struggle for food, warmth and safety begins.
Why stray animals are especially vulnerable
An animal on the street falls ill faster, gets injured and receives no treatment. Hunger and cold do the rest. Because there is no owner to take responsibility, everything depends on people who decide not to look away.
What your help means for a stray animal
Your gift becomes very concrete: safe capture, a check-up at the vet, medical care and a place to recover. At Stichting Animal Protect your donation goes straight to that first care for animals in need, including animals with no owner. On our transparency page we show where the money goes.
How you can help
See an animal that looks neglected or lost? Do not look away. You help by:
- reporting the animal through our contact form, with a photo and the location;
- sharing this story, so more people stay alert;
- donating, so help is ready when it is needed.
Honest about tax deductibility
We stay transparent: our ANBI status has been applied for and is not yet granted, so donations are not yet tax-deductible. As soon as ANBI is granted, we will state it here. In the meantime, keep your donation receipt.
An animal living on the street cannot wait. Helping can begin today.
Frequently asked questions
What people often ask us
Short, honest answers to the questions people ask most.
What should I do if I see a stray animal?
Approach the animal calmly and do not put yourself at risk. Report it through our contact form with a photo and the location. If there is acute danger or the animal is injured, call for help from a vet or animal ambulance as soon as possible.
How do you help stray and abandoned animals?
After a verified report, help focuses on first care: safe capture, a vet check-up, medical treatment and shelter. We keep the distance between the report and the first care as small as possible.
Can I help stray animals without taking them in myself?
Yes. You do not have to take an animal into your home to help. Reporting, sharing this story and donating together make it possible for an animal without an owner to still get the care it needs.
Are donations for stray animals tax-deductible?
Our ANBI status has been applied for but is not yet granted, so donations are not yet deductible. Once ANBI is granted, gifts may be deductible under conditions and we will state it here. Keep your donation receipt.
